Major Requirements
A major in Art may be earned through either: 1) Art History Emphasis, or 2) Studio Art Emphasis
Art History Emphasis
Requirements consist of 11 courses (10 regular courses and one 2-credit Independent Study) including:
- ART 160 ; ART 161 ;
- Five (5) courses selected from: ART 252 , ART 263 , ART 264 , ART 270 , ART 272 , ART 273 , ART 280 , ART 281 , ART 282 , ART 283 , ART 284 , ART 285 , ART 327 , ART 350 , ART 380 , or an approved topics course (must take at least one non-Western art history course);
- Two (2) Studio Art courses selected from: ART 130 , ART 131 , ART 230 , ART 233 , ART 234 , ART 235 , ART 236 , ART 239 , ART 330 , and ART 332 .
The Senior Capstone requirement for the Art History major is satisfied by completing two courses: a 2-credit Independent Study (ART 612 - Independent Project (fall semester of senior year), and ART 487 - Art History Methodology Seminar (spring semester of senior year), during which students write their 25-30 page capstone paper and present a public oral capstone presentation.
Studio Art Emphasis
Requirements consist of 11 courses:
- ART 130 ;
- One (1) from: ART 230 , ART 233 , ART 234 or ART 236 ;
- One (1) from ART 131 or ART 235 ;
- One (1) from ART 239 or ART 267 ;
- One (1) from 300-level studio: ART 330 , ART 332 , ART 333 , ART 370 , ART 371 , ART 372 , ART 373 , ART 374 or an approved topcis course (ART 394 ).
- Three additional (3) elective courses from the Studio Art curriculum;
- Two (2) Art History courses. (Of the two Art History courses, at least one must have a non-Western focus, and at least one must have a modern/contemporary focus. One course may fulfill both conditions, but two courses are still required).
The Senior Capstone requirement for the Studio Art major is satisfied by Senior Studio Seminar (ART 488 ) and the Senior Capstone Exhibition.
