Macalester’s Neuroscience Program provides a rigorous introduction to the study of the nervous system that is, like the field itself, rooted in biology and psychology. The major encompasses the foundations and frontiers of neuroscience from molecules to behavior, and the diverse methodologies of neuroscience inquiry. Following core courses in neuroscience, students explore subdisciplines with elective courses in areas such as cognitive neuroscience, neuroimmunology, neuroimaging, and abnormal psychology. All neuroscience students engage in experiential learning in research or community settings and learn to effectively communicate neuroscience findings. As such, students understand the relevance of neuroscience to society and public discourse, and are prepared for a variety of career pathways, including graduate study in neuroscience, health professions, and biomedical research.
