HIST 276 - The Great Tradition in Japan before 1853Cross-Listed as A survey of the major political, social, religious, intellectual, economic and artistic developments in Japan from earliest times to the opening of Japan in the 1850s. The course will revisit Japan’s emperor system, Shintoism, feudalism, Samurai as a class, selective borrowing from China, Korea, and the West, and the background of Japan’s rapid modernization after the Meiji Restoration. Meets the pre-1800 requirement, and can count towards “Colonization and Empire,” or “Race and Indigeneity,” or “Law and Social Justice,” or “Asia” fields. Alternate years. (4 Credits)
