German Studies Major

Major Requirements
A departmental major in German Studies consists of:
- 32 semester credits in German Studies above Intermediate German II, to include: GERM 307 or GERM 308 ; at least two of the following:
German Studies GERM 363 , GERM 364 , GERM 365 , and GERM 366 ; and GERM 488 as the senior capstone experience.
- 8 semester credits in or outside the German Studies department, which must include:
- One course providing an introduction to critical theory and approved by the department. GERM 327 - Darwin/Nietzsche/Freud or GERM 337 - Dead White Men fulfill this requirement. Possible courses outside the department include: MCST 110 or MCST 376 , ENGL 205 or ENGL 404 , INTL 110 , POLI 160 , POLI 260 or POLI 261 , PHIL 231 or PHIL 367 , PHIL 238 /PHIL 238 , RELI 235 , THDA 194 (topics course), WGSS 300 or WGSS 400 . Topics courses in critical theory taught in Media and Cultural Studies or in the German Department count subject to approval of department.
- One other course with significant German content. Possible courses include: ART 259 , ART 263 , ECON 225 , ECON 227 , ECON 325 , GEOG 261 , HIST 110 , HIST 258 , HIST 364 , MUSI 342 , MUSI 343 , POLI 241 , POLI 260 , or RELI 248 , RELI 346 .
- Participation in the Macalester German Study Abroad program.
