French and Francophone Studies Major


Major Requirements


A major in French consists of a minimum of nine courses:

  • FREN 204  if student arrives at Macalester and places below 300-level
  • FREN 306  
  • Six other advanced courses (300- and 400-level) if student counts FREN 204  OR seven advanced courses if student starts at the 300-level, including one upper-level course on a period preceding the 20th century (FREN 371 FREN 380 FREN 445 FREN 446 FREN 451 FREN 452 , or an equivalent relevant topics course)
  • Senior capstone requirement
  • Semester of study away in a French-speaking region, or an alternative immersion experience.
    • Up to three courses from an approved study away program can count toward the major

    • Students must take at least one upper-level FREN course at Macalester after they return from their immersion experience, such as a semester of study away

Senior Assessment

During the senior year, majors will be required to demonstrate proficiency in language, literature and culture by successfully completing a series of evaluations as outlined in departmental materials. These evaluations form part of the senior capstone requirement.
