ART 238 - Ceramic Art I: Wheel Throwing An introductory studio course designed to familiarize beginning students with techniques and concepts of contemporary ceramic art. Emphasis is on students’ personal expression through problem solving the assignments. Coil-building and wheel throwing techniques will be introduced in exploring the wide range of possibilities clay offers as an art medium. Projects vary and may include: utilitarian and non-utilitarian forms, vessel as metaphor, sculptural compositions and mixed media. Lectures are designed to expose students to the historical and contemporary uses of clay, as well as building a vocabulary for discussing three-dimensional art. Learning will be assessed primariliy through portfolio production and review. Two three-hour periods per week. Every fall semeseter. (4 Credits)
