POLI 363 - Paradigms of Global Citizenship In this course, we will read a number of classical and contemporary texts that attempt to address the -big- normative issues related to (global) civic life: -How should we think about the boundaries of civic or political community?-; -How should human beings live together, and govern themselves, within their political communities?-; -What rights, duties, responsibilities and virtues are necessarily associated with democratic citizenship?-; -Is there such a thing as `global citizenship?- ; and, if there is, -what is the relationship between human rights, cosmopolitan ethics and global citizenship?- The course approaches these questions from three normative perspectives: political liberalism, civic republicanism and cosmopolitanism. Although rooted in Western philosophical tradition, the course also draws on texts from other civilizations. Alternate years. (4 Credits)
