POLI 225 - The Politics of Migration Control In this course, we will explore the global phenomenon of migration control. The first part of the course will look at migrants and migration, focusing on how we have come to distinguish between migrants and refugees, voluntary and forced displacement, etc. and the effects of these distinctions. The second part will examine how and why states regulate mobility, paying attention, among other things, to different types of migration controls (detention, deportation, maritime missions, and biometric border controls), the role of privatization in migration control, and the externalization of borders. The third part of the course will turn to what can and should be done to live with, resist and/or reform migration control. Offered every year. (4 Credits)
