GEOL 265 - Sedimentology/Stratigraphy


This course focuses on sedimentary rocks and the stratigraphic record. Topics covered include the characterization and classification of sediments and sedimentary rocks (siliciclastic and carbonate), sedimentary structures (physical and biogenic), diagenesis, facies models, and basin analysis. Emphasis is placed on the interpretation of ancient sedimentary environments.  Students are also introduced to the principles and practice of stratigraphy, with a focus on sequence stratigraphy. Field trip to western Minnesota/eastern South Dakota. Three 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour lab per week. Prerequisite(s): GEOL 165  and GEOL 250  or permission of instructor. Offered spring semester. (4 Credits)
