RELI 120 - Beginnings of Judaism

This course introduces students to biblical studies and the history of ancient Israel and early Judaism by focusing on three formative periods for the formation of the bible, biblical authority, and Jewish identity. In our reading of the Tanak/Old Testament and Jewish texts from the Second Temple and early rabbinic periods, we will employ a variety of interpretive strategies, including historical-critical, literary, feminist, and post-colonial approaches that attempt to locate these texts in their historical, political, and social contexts. In presentations, reflection papers, and close readings, students will learn to engage biblical and early Jewish literature in a critical and constructive fashion and to attend to the social, theological, and political implications of interpretation. Offered every year. (4 Credits)
