ENGL 361 - The American Novel

Traces the history of the novel in America from its epistolary beginnings in the late 18th century to its postmodern incarnations in the late twentieth century. Possible authors include Hannah Wester Foster, James Fenimore Cooper, Herman Melville, Stephen Crane, Edith Wharton, Henry James, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Vladimir Nabokov, and Thomas Pynchon. Prerequisite(s): one 100-level ENGL course. Alternate years. (4 Credits)
