Latin American Studies Minor


The Latin American Studies minor consists of 6 courses, as follows:

I. INTRODUCTION TO LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES - ONE COURSE

ANTH 255 - Latin America in Motion  
GEOG 249 - Environment and Society in Latin America  
LATI 141 - Latin America Through Women’s Eyes 
LATI 151 - Caribbean Literature and Culture: Aesthetics of Resistance 
LATI 171 - Susurros del Pasado: Whispers Toward the 21st Century 
LATI 181 - Introduction to Latin America  

II. LANGUAGE

Competency in Spanish to the level of SPAN 305  or competency in Portuguese to the level of PORT 331 .

III. LATIN AMERICA ACROSS THE DISCIPLINES - FIVE COURSES

Choose five courses from the following disciplinary areas: Latin American Arts in Context, Humanities, or Social Sciences. No more than three can come from a single disciplinary area. One study abroad course can be counted toward this requirement, with the Director’s approval. At least one course must be an advanced 300-level seminar (400 level in Hispanic Studies). Minors may also elect to enroll in LATI 488  as their advanced seminar. (See list of Across the Disciplines courses .)

IV. CURRICULAR OVERLAP

Due to potential overlap between a minor plan in Latin American Studies and a major or minor plan in either Hispanic Studies or International Studies, students must list on their Latin American Studies minor plan at least three courses that do not appear on the other plan.
